Results:OneoftheinfestationspecificCuscutagenesencodesacysteineprotease.Theproteinanditsintrinsic inhibitorypeptidewereheterologouslyexpressed,purifiedandbiochemicallycharacterized.Thehaustoriaspecific enzymewasnamedcuscutaininaccordancewithsimilarproteinsfromotherplants,e.g.papaya.Theroleof cuscutainanditsinhibitorduringthehostparasiteinteractionwasstudiedbyexternalapplicationofaninhibitor suspension,whichinducedasignificantreductionofsuccessfulinfectionevents. Conclusions:Thestudyprovidesnewinformationaboutmoleculareventsduringtheparasiticplant-host interaction.Inhibitionofcuscutaincysteineproteinasecouldprovidemeansforantagonizingparasiticplants.
