Kitamotoetal.BiotechnologyforBiofuels2011,4:46 /content/4/1/46(1November2011) Kitamotoetal.BiotechnologyforBiofuels2011,4:46 /content/4/1/46 RESEARCH OpenAccess Silageproducesbiofuelforlocalconsumption HirokoKKitamoto1*?,MitsuoHorita1?,YiminCai2,4,YukikoShinozaki1andKeijiSakaki3 Abstract Background:Inthenormalprocessofbioethanolproduction,biomassistransportedtointegratedlargefactories fordegradationtosugar,fermentation,andrecoveryofethanolbydistillation.Biomassnutrientlossoccursduring preservationanddegradation.Ouraimwastodevelopadecentralizedethanolproductionsystemappropriatefor farmorco-operativelevelproductionthatusesasolid-statefermentationmethodforproducingbio-ethanolfrom wholecrops,providescattlefeed,andproducesnowastes.Theideaistoincorporatetraditionalsilagemethods withsimultaneoussaccharificationandfermentation.Harvested,freshbiomassisensiledwithbiomass-degrading enzymesandyeast.Multipleparallelreactionsforbiomassdegradationandethanolandlacticacidproductionare inducedinsolidcultureinhermeticallysealedcontainersataranch.Afterfermentation,ethanoliscollectedonsite fromthevaporfromheatedfermentedproducts. Results:Theparallelreactionsofsimultaneoussaccharificationandfermentationwereinducedefficientlyinthe modelfermentationsystem.Inalaboratory-scalefeasibilitystudyoftheprocess,250goffreshlyharvestedforage ricewith62%moisturewastreatedwith0.86filterpaperunits/gdrymatter(DM)ofcellulaseand0.32U/gDMof glucoamylase.After20daysofincubationat28°C,6.4wt.%ofethanolinfreshmatter(equivalentto169g/kgDM) wasproduced.Whenthe46wt.%moisturewasgatheredasvaporfromthefermentedproduct,74%ofthe producedethanolwascollected.Organiccellularcontents(suchastheamylaseandpronasedegradablefractions) weredecreasedby63%andorganiccellwall(fiber)contentby7%comparedtosilagepreparedfromthesame material. Conclusions:Weconfirmedthatefficientethanolproductionisinducedinnonsterilizedwholericeplantsina laboratory-scalesolid-statefermentationsys
