Understandingthebreedingactivityofindividual animals becomes a prerequisite for a successful breeding program. This study set out to investigatethesourcesofvariationandthegeneticpro?leofthespontaneous, out-of-season ovulatoryactivityofewesoftheChiosdairysheepbreedinGreece. Thede?nitionofthetrait wasbasedonbloodprogesteronelevels, measuredbeforeexposingtheewestorams, which markstheonsetoftheusualbreedingseason.Datawere707records,takenovertwoconsecutive years,of435eweskeptattheAgriculturalResearchStationofChalkidikiinnorthernGreece. When all available pedigree was included, the total number of animals involved was 1068. Onaverage,29%ofallewesexhibitedspontaneous,out-of-seasonovulatoryactivity,withno substantialvariationbetweentheyears.Signi?cantsourcesofsystematicvariationweretheewe ageandliveweight,andthemonthofpreviouslambing. Older,heavierewes,thathadlambed earlythepreviousautumn,exhibitedmorefrequentactivity. Heritabilityestimateswere0.216 (0.084)withalinearand0.291withathresholdmodel. Thelatterbetteraccountsforthe categoricalnatureofthetrait. Thelinearmodelrepeatabilitywas0.230(0.095). Theresults obtainedinthisstudysupportthenotionthatspontaneousout-of-seasonovulatory
