Methods:Nationalspatialsurfacesofambientairpollutionwerecompiledfromrecentsatellite-basedestimates (forPM2.5 andNO2)andachemicaltransportmodel(forO3).Thesurfaceswereadjustedwithhistoricalannualair pollutionmonitoringdata,usingeitherspatiotemporalinterpolationorlinearregression.Modelevaluationwas conductedusinganindependenttenpercentsubsetofmonitoringdataperyear.Proximitytomajorroads, incorporatingatemporalweightingfactorbasedonCanadianmobile-sourceemissionestimates,wasusedto estimateexposuretovehicleemissions.Acomprehensiveinventoryofgeocodedindustrieswasusedtoestimate proximitytomajorandminorindustrialemissions. Results:CalibrationofthenationalPM2.5 surfaceusingannualspatiotemporalinterpolationpredictedhistorical PM2.5 measurementdatabest(R2=0.51),whilelinearregressionincorporatingthenationalsurfaces,atime-trend andpopulationdensitybestpredictedhistoricalconcentrationsofNO2(R2=0.38)andO3(R2=0.56).Applyingthe modelstostudyparticipantsresidentialhistoriesbetween1975and1994resultedinmeanPM2.5,NO2andO3 3 exposuresof11.3μg/m (SD=2.6),17.7ppb(4.1),and26.4ppb(3.4)respectively.Onaverage,individualslived within300mofahighwayfor2.9years(15%ofexposure-years)andwithin3kmofamajorindustrialemitterfor 6.4yea
