Vicarietal.BiotechnologyforBiofuels2012,5:23 /content/5/1/23 RESEARCH OpenAccess Uncertaintyintechno-economicestimatesof cellulosicethanolproductionduetoexperimental measurementuncertainty KristinJVicari1,2,SaiSandeepTallam1,2,TatyanaShatova1,2,KohKangJoo1,2,ChristopherJScarlata3, DavidHumbird3,EdwardJWolfrum3*andGreggTBeckham3,4* Abstract Background:Cost-effectiveproductionoflignocellulosicbiofuelsremainsamajorfinancialandtechnicalchallenge attheindustrialscale.Acriticaltoolinbiofuelsprocessdevelopmentisthetechno-economic(TE)model,which calculatesbiofuelproductioncostsusingaprocessmodelandaneconomicmodel.Theprocessmodelsolvesmass andenergybalancesforeachunit,andtheeconomicmodelestimatescapitalandoperatingcostsfromthe processmodelbasedoneconomicassumptions.Theprocessmodelinputsincludeexperimentaldataonthe feedstockcompositionandintermediateproductyieldsforeachunit.Theseexperimentalyielddataarecalculated fromprimarymeasurements.Uncertaintyintheseprimarymeasurementsispropagatedtothecalculatedyields,to theprocessmodel,andultimatelytotheeconomicmodel.Thus,outputsoftheTEmodelhaveaminimum uncertaintyassociatedwiththeuncertaintyintheprimarymeasurements. Results:WecalculatetheuncertaintyintheMinimumEthanolSellingPrice(MESP)estimateforlignocellulosic ethanolproductionviaabiochemicalconversionprocess:dilutesulfuricacidpretreatmentofcornstoverfollowed byenzymatichydrolysisandco-fermentationoftheresultingsugarstoethanol.Weperformasensitivityanalysison theTEmodelandidentifythefeedstockcompositionandconversionyieldsfromthreeunitoperations(xylosefrom pretreatment,glucosefromenzymatichydrolysis,andethanolfromfermentation)asthemostimportantvariables. Theuncertaintyinthepretreatmentxyloseyieldarisesfrommultiplemeasurements,whereastheglucoseand ethanolyieldsfromenzymatichydrolysisandfermentation,respectively,aredominatedbyasinglemeasurement: thefractionofinsolublesolids(fIS)inthebiomassslurries.
