Methods:Sixcriteriaareproposedtoevaluatecross-culturalvalidityofchildmentalhealthinstruments:(i)purpose ofinstrument,(ii)constructmeasured,(iii)contentsofconstruct,(iv)localidiomsemployed,(v)structureof responsesets,and(vi)comparisonwithothermeasurablephenomena.Thesecriteriaareappliedtotranscultural translationandalternativevalidationfortheDepressionSelf-RatingScale(DSRS)andChildPTSDSymptomScale (CPSS)inNepal,whichrecentlysufferedadecadeofwarincludingconscriptionofchildsoldiersandwidespread displacementofyouth.TransculturaltranslationwasconductedwithNepalimentalhealthprofessionalsandsix focusgroupswithchildren(n=64)aged11-15yearsold.Becauseofthelackofchildmentalhealthprofessionals inNepal,apsychosocialcounselorperformedanalternativevalidationprocedureusingpsychosocialfunctioningas acriterionforintervention.Thevalidationsamplewas162children(11-14yearsold).TheKiddie-Schedulefor AffectiveDisordersandSchizophrenia(K-SADS)andGlobalAssessmentofPsychosocialDisability(GAPD)wereused toderiveindicationfortreatmentastheexternalcriterion. Results:Theinstrumentsdisplayedmoderatetogoodpsychometricproperties:DSRS(areaunderthecurve(AUC) =0.82,sensitivity=0.71,specificity=0.81,cutoffscore≥14);CPSS(AUC=0.77,sensitivity=0.68,specificity=0.73, cutoffscore≥20).TheDSRSitemswithsignificantdiscriminantvaliditywere“havingene
