Methods:PatientswhowereenrolledintheEarlyRheumatoidArthritisNetworkcohortandwereemployedat theirmostrecentfollow-upwererecruitedintothissub-study.AquestionnairebatteryincorporatingtheWPAIwas administeredalongwithanumberofhealthoutcomesincludingtheMultidimensionalHealthAssessment Questionnaire,fatigueandpatientassessmentofdiseaseactivity.TheconstructvalidityoftheWPAIwastestedby thecorrelationsbetweentheWPAIandthehealthoutcomesandothermeasuresofproductivity.Student’sttests wereusedtoidentifywhethertheWPAIoutcomesdifferedbetweenthetwolevelsofheathstatusbasedonthe medianofhealthoutcomes. Results:Atotalof150patientscompletedtheWPAIquestionnaire.Theaverageagewas52yearsoldandthe diseasedurationwas37.5monthssincethefirstrheumatologyvisit.Ofthe137patientswhowereworkingforpay, 26reportedmissingworkinthepastweekduetotheirhealthproblem,accountingfor45.5%oftheirworking time(absenteeism).While123patientswereworking,24%oftheirworkwasimpairedduetotheirhealthproblem (presenteeism).Inaddition,33%ofthepatients’regulardailyactivities(activityimpairment)hadbeenprevented duetotheirhealthproblems.ThereweremoderatecorrelationsbetweentheWPAIabsenteeismandfunction, pain,fatigue,anddiseaseseverity(r=0.34to0.39).TheWPAIpresenteeismandactivityimpairmentwerestrongly correlatedwiththehealthoutcomes(0.67
