Rootabsorbedironiscriticalfortheironnutritionoftheplant,andforthedeliveryofirontotheshootand ultimatelytheseeds.Theobjectivesofthisstudyweretodeterminethevariabilityandinheritanceforiron reductaseactivityinarangeofgenotypesandinalow×highseedironcross(DOR364×G19833),toidentify quantitativetraitloci(QTL)forthistrait,andtoassesspossibleassociationswithseedironlevels. Results:Theexperimentswerecarriedoutwithhydroponicallygrownplantsprovideddifferentamountsofiron varyingbetween0and20μMFe(III)-EDDHA.Theparents,DOR364andG19833,plus13othercultivatedorwild beans,werefoundtodifferinironreductaseactivity.Basedontheseinitialexperiments,twogrowthconditions (ironlimitedandironsufficient)wereselectedastreatmentsforevaluatingtheDOR364×G19833recombinant inbredlines.AsinglemajorQTLwasfoundforironreductaseactivityunderiron-limitedconditions(1μMFe)on linkagegroupb02andanothermajorQTLwasfoundunderironsufficientconditions(15μMFe)onlinkagegroup b11.Associationsbetweentheb11QTLwerefoundwithseveralQTLforseediron. Conclusions:Genesconditioningironreductaseactivityinironsufficientbeanplantsappeartobeassociatedwith genescontributingtoseedironaccumulation.Markersforbeanironreductase(FRO)homologueswerefoundwith insilicomappingbasedoncommonbeansyntenywithsoybeanandMedicagotruncatulaonb06andb07; however,neitherlocusalignedwiththeQTLforironreductaseactivity.Insummary,theQTLforironreductase ac
