Objectives:ToinvestigatetheantimicrobialsusceptibilityamongisolatesofStreptomycesspp.isolatedfromcases ofactinomycetomainmanandanimalsinSudan. Methods:Streptomycesstrains(n=18)isolatedfromcasesofactinomycetomaweretestedinvitroagainst 15commonlyprescribedantibacterialagentsusingMICagardilutionmethodasperstandardguidelines. Results:Streptomycesstrainsisolatedfromactinomycetomafallintovariousphenotypicgroups.Allofthestrains wereinhibitedbynovobiocin(8μg/mL),gentamycin(8,32μg/mL)anddoxycycline(32μg/mL).Fusidicacid (64μg/mL)inhibited94.4%ofthestrains;bacitracin,streptomycin,cephaloridine,clindamycin,ampicillin,rifampicin andtetracycline(64μg/mL)inhibitedbetween61.1and77.8%ofthestrains.Allstrainswerefoundresistantto amphotericinB(64μg/mL),penicillin(20μg/mL)andsulphamethoxazole(64μg/mL). Conclusions:SaprophyticStreptomycesspp.causeactinomycetomainmanandanimalbelongtoseparate phenotypesandhaveawiderangeofsusceptibilitypatternstoantimicrobialagents,whichposealotof difficultiesinselectingeffectiveinvivotreatmentforactinomycetoma.
