GerbersdorfandSchubertEnvironmentalSciencesEurope2011,23:36 /content/23/1/36 RESEARCH OpenAccess Verticalmigrationofphytoplanktonincoastal waterswithdifferentUVRtransparency SabineUlrikeGerbersdorf1*andHendrikSchubert2 Abstract Background:Theverticalmigrationofphytoplanktonwasinvestigatedinnaturalwatersusinginsitufluorescence profiling,chlorophyllaconcentrationsandlifecountsattwostudysitesdifferingincoloureddissolvedorganic matter(cDOM)concentrations.Thedatafromthecorrespondingwaterdepths(50-cmintervalsdownto10m)and times(hourly,beforedawntosunset,severaldays)wererelatedtothehighlyresolved(2nm)underwater ultravioletradiation(UVR)/photosyntheticactiveradiation(PAR)transparency(290to700nm). Results:Chlorophyllamaximaofmainlymotiledinoflagellateswereobservedinsituatalldaysandatbothstudy sites(openmarine,brackishwaters),independentonprevailingweatherconditionsorcDOMconcentrations. Phytoplanktonmigrationwastriggeredsolelybyirradianceinthe400-to700-nmwavelengthrange(PAR)atthe particularwaterdepth,irrespectiveofPAR/UVRratiosandsurfaceUVR(290to400nm),afteranilluminationperiod ofabout40min.Interestingly,thePARtolerancelevelsofthephytoplankton,whichhavebeenlowerincDOM-rich waters,matchedtheirlightacclimationvaluesdeterminedbyparallelPAMmeasurements. Conclusions:TheresponseofthephytoplanktontoPARisnotasufficientprotectionstrategyversusincreasing UVRlevels,whichmighthavewideecologicalimplicationsbeyondthelevelofprimaryproducerstoimpact importantecosystemfunctionssuchasthedelicatetrophicinteractions.
