Methods:InMay2009,weconductedthreecross-sectionalsurveysamong200000residentanddisplacedpeople inNorthKivu(Kabizo,Masisi,Kitchanga).Therecallperiodcoveredaneightmonthperiodfromthebeginningof themostrecentoffensivestothesurveydate.Headsofhouseholdsprovidedinformationondisplacement,death, violence,theft,andaccesstofieldsandhealthcare. Results:Crudemortalityrates(per10000perday)werebelowemergencythresholds:Kabizo0.2(95%CI:0.1-0.4), Masisi0.5(0.4-0.6),Kitchanga0.7(0.6-0.9).Violencewasthereportedcausein39.7%(27/68)and35.8%(33/92)ofdeaths inMasisiandKitchanga,respectively.InMasisi99.1%(897/905)andKitchanga50.4%(509/1020)ofhouseholdsreported atleastonemembersubjectedtoviolence.Displacementwasreportedby39.0%ofhouseholds(419/1075)in Kitchangaand99.8%(903/905)inMasisi.Theftaffected87.7%(451/514)ofhouseholdsinMasisiand57.4%(585/1019) inKitchanga.Accesstohealthcarewasgood:93.5%(359/384)ofthesickinKabizo,81.7%(515/630)inMasisi,and 89.8%(651/725)inKitchangareceivedcare,ofwhom83.0%(298/359),87.5%(451/515),and88.9%(579/651), respectively,didnotpay. Conclusions:Ourresultsshowtheimpactoftheongoingwaronthesecivilianpopulations:onethirdofdeaths wereviolentintwosites,individualsarefrequentlysubjectedtoviolence,anddisplacementsandtheftare common.Whilehumanitarianaidmayhavehadapositiveimpactondiseasemortalityandaccesstocare,the populationremainsexposedtoextremelyhighleve
