Ifoneoftheserollshassomekindof?aw,itcangenerateadefectonthematerialsurface eachtimeitcompletesafullturn.Thiscancausethegenerationofalargenumberofsurface defects,greatlydegradingtheproductquality.Forthisreason,itisnecessarytohaveasystem thatcandetectthesesituationsassoonaspossible.Thispaperpresentsavision-basedsensor fortheearlydetectionofthiskindofdefects. Itcanbeadaptedtobeusedintheinspection ofanywebmaterial,evenwhentheinputdataareverynoisy. Toassessitsperformance, the sensor system was used to detect periodical defects in hot steel strips. A total of 36 stripsproducedinArcelorMittalAvil′esfactorywereusedforthispurpose,18todetermine theoptimalcon?gurationoftheproposedsensorusingafull-factorialexperimentaldesign andtheother18toverifythevalidityoftheresults. Next,theywerecomparedwiththose providedbyacommercialsystemusedworldwide,showingaclearimprovement.
