Materialandmethods:Ninetybovineenamelspecimenswereallocatedtosixgroups(n=15).Metalbracketswere bondedonallspecimensafterchlorhexidinepre-treatmentsformingthefollowinggroups:(1)untreatedspecimens (control);(2)40%varnish(EC40,BiodentBV,Netherlands),remnantsremovedwithbrushingmimickingpatient cleaning;(3)40%varnish(EC40),remnantsremovedwithbrushingmimickingprofessionalcleaning;(4)1%varnish (CervitecPlus,Ivoclarvivadent,Schaan,Liechtenstein),remnantsnotremoved;(5)brushedwith%1gel(Corsodyl, GlaxoSmithKline,Münchenbuchsee,Germany),remnantsnotremoved;(6)immersedin0.07%mouthrinse(Corsodyl, GlaxoSmithKline,Münchenbuchsee,Germany),remnantnotrinsed.Debondingofbracketswasperformedusinga universaltestingmachine.Datawereanalysedusingone-wayANOVAandpost-hocScheffétest. Results:Group4performedsignificantlyinferiorthanalltheothergroupsandthecontrol.Group4presentedthe highestnumberofadhesivefailuresattheenamel-resininterfacewhereasinothergroupsnofailuresat adhesive-resininterfacewasobserved. Conclusion:Presenceofchlorhexidinevarnishpriortobracketbondingadverselyaffectsadhesion.Concentration ofchlorhexidinepre-treatmenthasnoinfluenceonshearbondstrength.
