Results:Tounderstandthecompletepictureofgenesregulatedbyindole,weperformedDNAmicroarrayanalysis ofgenesintheS.entericaserovarTyphimuriumstrainATCC14028saffectedbyindole.PredictedSalmonella phenotypesaffectedbyindolebasedonthemicroarraydatawerealsoexaminedinthisstudy.Indoleinduced expressionofgenesrelatedtoefflux-mediatedmultidrugresistance,includingramAandacrAB,andrepressedthose relatedtohostcellinvasionencodedintheSalmonellapathogenicityisland1,andflagellaproduction.Reductionof invasiveactivityandmotilityofSalmonellabyindolewasalsoobservedphenotypically. Conclusion:Ourresultssuggestthatindoleisanimportantsignalingmoleculeforinter-speciescommunicationto controldrugresistanceandvirulenceofS.enterica.
