Objective:ToinvestigatethefeasibilityofmeasuringFeNOanduEPXininfantsandtheirmothersandto determineifanyrelationsbetweenthesetwovariablesandenvironmentalfactorscanbeseeninasmallsample size.ThiswasconductedasapilotstudyfortheongoingSwedishEnvironmentalLongitudinalMotherandchild Asthmaandallergystudy(SELMA). Methods:Consecutiveinfantsbetweentwoandsixmonthsoldandtheirmothersatchildren’shealthcarecentres wereinvited,and110mother-infantpairsparticipated.FeNOanduEPXwereanalysedinbothmothersandinfants. FeNOwasanalyzedinthemothersonlinebytheuseofthehandheldNioxMinodeviceandintheinfantsoffline fromexhaledairsampledduringtidalbreathing.A33-questionmultiple-choicequestionnairethatdealtwith symptomsofallergicdisease,heredity,andhousingcharacteristicswasused. Results:FeNOlevelswerereducedininfantswithahistoryofupperrespiratorysymptomsduringtheprevious twoweeks(p0.002).TherewasatrendtowardshigherFeNOlevelsininfantswithwindowpanecondensationin thehome(p0.05).TherewasnoassociationbetweenuEPXintheinfantsandtheotherstudiedvariables. Conclusion:TheuseofuEPXasamarkerofearlyinflammationwasnotsupported.FeNOlevelsininfantswere associatedtowindowpanecondensation.MeasuringFeNObythepresentmethodmaybeaninterestingwayof evaluatingearlyairwayinflammation.Inamajorpopulationstudy,however,themethodisdifficulttouse,for practicalreasons.
