Unit 4 Earthquakes A Night The Earth Didn’t Sleep Part I. Analysis of the Teaching Material The topic of this unit is “earthquakes” and the reading part is about Tangshan earthquake. The passage consists of four paragraphs. From the first paragraph, we can easily see that there were many strange signs before the earthquake, but people thought little of those events. The second and the third paragraph describe how the city became a ruin in 15 seconds. The damages to the city and the people were tremendous. However, in the last paragraph, we were glad to see hope was still there and with the help of the army, the city began to rebuild. Part II. Analysis of the Students For the students in Grade One in senior high school, they can’t express themselves in English very fluently. They may be a little bit shy and nervous when answering teacher’s questions. Part III. Teaching Aims Knowledge Objectives: Enable Ss to learn some useful words and expressions: well, crack, burst, destroy, bury, trap, rescue, electricity, disaster, lay in ruins. b. Enable Ss to grasp the form and the meaning of half-negative sentences. 2. Ability Goals: To find out the topic sentences of each paragraph. . To cultivate students’ skills in finding out the detailed information in the text. To understand the sentences according to the context. 3. Moral Objectives: To strengthen students’ self-protection awareness in facing an earthquake. Part IV. Teaching Important and Difficult Points: It’s important to know how the passage develops and then grasp the main idea of the passage by finding out the topic sentences of each paragraph. 2. It may be a little bit difficult for Ss to draw a mind map. Part V. Teaching Studying Methods: Task-based Approach --- Teacher acts as a facilitator, organizer, monitor or partner. Part VI. Teaching Aids: Multi-media, Blackboard PartVII. Teaching Procedures Activities Intentions Time Step 1 Lead-in T shows some pictures of earthquakes to the Ss. To lead in
