A b str a c t D irectional w ords in M an darin C h inese not only have the directional m eaning, but also have th e tem poral inform ation . T he thesis studies the tem poral inform ation of directional w ords su ch as SH A N G , X IA , LA I, Q U ，SH A N G L A I, SH A N G Q U , X IA LA I and X IA Q U in M andarin C h inese. W e analyze th e language m aterials co llected from C C L , M odern C h inese D ictionary and D irectional C om p lem ent E xp lanation w ith Sm ith s aspectual v iew point and situation typ e. LA IZ H E and X IA Q U are gram m aticalized aspectual m arkers. L A IZ H E ind icates th e recent past w h ile X IA Q U is th e continu ou s asp ectu al m ark er. T h e other directional w ords have a variety of tem poral inform ation. W e classify th e tem poral in form ation into three m ajor categories :tem poral adverb ials，situation aspect and v iew point aspect. E ach category is fu rther divided into m ore sp ecific sub categories. T hrough theoretical analysis, w e find out the tem poral in form ation of directional w ords in M andarin C h inese have som eth ing to do w ith R esu ltative V erb C om p lem ents (R V C s)， sp ace-tim e relation s, pragm atic factors and lex icalization . RV C s are relevant to th e situ ation asp ect. Som e d irectional w ords are evolved into th e d isyllab les b y com b in ing w ith th e verb s and b ecom e part of the m ental lexicon. From a synchron ic perspective, m ost of the directional w ords in M andarin C h in ese m aintain the directional m eaning and th eir tem poral inform ation are not fully gram m aticalized. T h e study about th e tem poral inform ation o f directional w ords w ill contribu te to th e study of asp ect system in M andarin C h inese.
