English Abstract Abstract The thesis searches into the common uses and the peculiar distribution of Chinese reflexive ziji ，especially the long-distance binding, subject-orientation and sub-commanding in its anaphoric use and its generic use. Chomsky’s Binding Theory devices supply a relatively brief analytic motion for the syntactic and semantic relationship between the anaphoric expressions and their antecedents. But the classical Binding Theory cannot well predict the distribution and binding relation of ziji and its antecedent because ziji sometimes violates the local requirement imposed by binding condition A, and enjoys more freedom in the choice of antecedents than English reflexives. For the recent decades many solutions to zijis local and long-distance binding have been proposed on diverse kinds by refining and revising the Binding Theory in both syntactic and non-syntactic fields. It is shown that mono-linguistic approaches have some limitations in accounting for the reference of long-distance reflexive ziji since ziji-binding is not an isolated matter of syntax, but needs the interaction of syntactic principles with semantic and discourse factors. The thesis gives an analysis on the anaphoric and generic specialties within the theoretical framework of Neo-Griceon pragmatic anaphora in that it has the features of an anaphor and that of a pronoun at the same time. And the generic use which English reflexive does not have, is one of the Chinese reflexive ziji ’s specialties. The analysis of the emphatic use of the Chinese reflexive ziji is also the important content of this thesis
