Abstract Legal English and legal Chinese are the outward manifestation of English legal system and Chinese legal system. The communication between these two systems has to resort to translation, the necessary bridge. Hence, the translation of law determines the correct comprehension and appropriate application of the law. , it will influence the effective international connection and the achievement of the political and economical goals. Nowadays, legal translation research in China is much prosperous, and has also been paid much attention by the scholars from the translation circle, the jurisprudential circle and other departments of the related fields. The work on legal translation, however, lags behind that of western developed countries as a whole, especially in researches of the legal translation theory and practice. Legal translation, theoretical and practical, is a channel of communication across different legal cultures and different legal languages. This work must be done under the guidance of consummate translation theories. Among many theories developed by worldwide scholars in this field, Eugene A. Nida ’s “Functional Equivalence” theory is one of the most accepted and useful theories. Nida pointed out that the translation work is to reproduce the most suitable and fluent information equivalent to the formal information in the target language. When it comes to applying his theory to the practice of translation, Nida has also developed some practical rules for his “Functional Equivalence” theory.
