In this paper we characterise Banach lattices for which T-accretive implies accretive as being of dimension 3 or having a p addi- tive norm. We give an alternative approach to Andos result that a three dimensionalBanachlattice has lp norm if there are contractiveprojectives onto sublattices of dimension 2. Introduction. In the 1960s,Phillips[11] and Sato and Gustafson[12], writing on semigroupsof positive contractions,asked if their dispersive operatorsweredissipative.An operatorA: X -• 2X in a BanachlatticeX is called dispersiveif for A 0 and u and v in X, II((•- A)-• - (Z- A)-•v)+ • (• - v)+ . Kartsatos recently asked me about operators xvhichwere T- accretive,but not accretive,and an exampleappearsin [8]. In this paper, as stated in the abstract,we answerthe question:for which Banachspaces doesT-accretive imply accretive?This appearsas Theorem 2. The proof refers to the result of Ando, given below as Theorem A [1], [9,Theorem4, õ 16]whichcharacterisesspaceshavingp additivenorm, sincethisthen givesthe quickestproof. An alternativemoredirectapproach is givenwhich requiresa result parallelto Andos, concerningthe normals to the unit sphere,and which is provedby usinga very simple lemma on functionsto replaceBohnenbluststheorem[9, Theorem4, õ 15].
