Word study: paradox
paradox: a situation or statement which seems impossible or is difficult to understand because it contains two opposite facts or characteristics:
“More haste, less speed” and “the child is father to the man” are paradoxes.
It seems paradoxical to me, but if you drink a cup of hot tea it seems to cool you down.
Paragraph 1
enjoin: to instruct someone to do something or to behave in a particular way:
[+ to infinitive] We were all enjoined to be on our best behavior.
ordain: (of God or someone in authority) to order something to happen:
God ordained that all men shall die.
relinquish: to give up something
He relinquished his throne to marry Mrs. Simpson.

clench: to close or hold something very tightly, often in a determined or angry way:
The old man clenched his fist and waved it angrily at us.
