Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) Her life After 1862 she became a total recluse. Her later retirement from the world seems mainly to have resulted from her own personality from a desire to separate herself from the world. Her greatest outpouring of poems occurred in the early 1860s, and because she was so isolated, the Civil War affected her thinking very little. She has no interests in having them published; in fact, she had only 7 poems published during her lifetime. After her death, her sister found nearly 1800 poems that she had written. Many of her poems were finally published in the 1890s, and she was rediscovered by literary world in the 1920s. Dickinson’s works have had considerable influence on Modern poetry. 　　　　General themes Dickinson’s poetry comes out in bursts. The poems are short, many of them being based on a single image or symbol. But within her little lyrics she writes some of the most important things in life. 1.?She writes about nature. 2.She writes about mortality and immortality. 3.She writes about success, which she thought she never achieved, and she writes about failure, which she considered her constant companion. Analysis of Emily Dickinson’s “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” Without a doubt Emily’s richest personification of Death are those which portray him as a gentleman caller or as a suitor. “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” is one of her more popular poems which has as its controlling image a well-realized rendition（演奏） of the complex character of Death and which is also a remarkably succinct statement of Dickinson’s own ambivalent（矛盾的） reactions to death. The poem is a dramatic representation of the passage from this world of the living to the afterlife. The event is couched in a metaphorical use of an activity familiar enough to men and women of the 19th century---a formal but friendly drive in a carriage in the country of a gentleman and his intended lady. 　因为我不能够停下去死—他为我停下友善和气—四轮马车只载着我们自己—并且不死。 我们慢慢驱车—他知道不急而
