Self-evidently the guitar is a plucked string instrument. ii. Like the piano it is a percussion instrument, and much closer in character to that than to the bowed strings. iii. At its simplest the guitar can be a melody instrument (music for the recorder works particularly well), a bass instrument (its lowest note is E2, only a 3rd higher than that of the cello), a chord instrument – whether strummed or plucked, or a polyphonic instrument combining elements of all of these at the composerʼs wish. iv. Its origins are in the viol family, in particular the viola di mano, and the Spanish instrument, the vihuela. These names still resonate in the Brazilian name of violão for the standard guitar. v. All of the orchestral instruments have reached a developmental stasis. One of the great things about the guitar is that it is possible with plucked string instruments to ask a luthier to build an instrument of any configuration that one might wish for (always assuming that it is possible to get appropriate strings for it).
