In order to apply the quantities interdisciplinarily, we also discuss some of their properties such as their structural interpretation and uniqueness. Keywords: information theory; networks; quantitative graph analysis 1. Introduction Information theory has been proven useful to solve interdisciplinary problems. For example, problems in biology, chemistry, computer science, ecology, electrical engineering, and neuroscience have been tackled by using information-theoretic methods such as entropy and mutual information, see [ 1–5]. In particular, advanced information-measures such as the Jensen–Shannon divergence have also been used for performing biological sequence analysis [6]. In terms of investigating networks, information-theoretic techniques have been applied in an interdisciplinary manner [7– 1
