Warming-up: linguistic features of speakers’ utterance in different situations
People’s speech may have different features in different situations. For example, during a class, there may be plenty of questions in the teacher’s speech, while in a research article, we can hardly find a question written by the writer.
The features of language can be described from various aspects, such as mood, tense, voice, person, and so on. Particularly, for spoken language, we can also describe them from phonological aspects, like rhythm, pitch, tone.
Question: If a patient comes to see the doctor in a clinic, what do you think will be the features of the doctor’s speech?
There may be more questions in the doctor’s speech than the patient’s speech.
Past tense may show up frequently because the doctor and the patient will talk about the things done in the past.
Imperative sentences may occur in the doctor’s speech during the examination.
Listening activity I
Listen to a conversation between a doctor and a patient who first comes to the doctor. Tr
