Writing 3Assignment 3夏雨璇1132027070The Gothic Elements in Wuthering HeightsWuthering Heights is a story about the love and revenge of the main character, Heathcliff. This book successfully employs the forms of Gothic novel. The term “Gothic” has also been extended to a type of fiction which lacks the exotic setting of earlier romances, but develops a brooding atmosphere of gloom and terror, represents events that are uncanny or macabre or melodramatically violent, and often deals with aberrant psychological states(Pu,48). Wuthering Heights is a paradigm of applying the tradition Gothic style in portraying the environment, character, and theme. The setting not only evokes the atmosphere of dread and horror, but also predicts a tragic ending. At the beginning of the novel, Mr.Lockwood first arrives at Wuthering Heights, and describes with “the narrow windows are deeply set in the wall, and the corners defend with large jugging stones...” Even he doesn’t get into the Wuthering Heights, he feels the whole place enveloped?in a gloomy and gruesome atmosphere. In addition, the weather is variable and fierce. Mr. Lockwood is caught by a storm and has to stay at Wuthering Height. Besides, Heathcliff leaves the Heights in a stormy night, Catherine rushes out to call him back, she is drenched by the heavy rain. Nelly thinks it is a bad forecast that a nearby tree was broken in half by the wailing wind blends the thunderstorm. Heathcliff also comes back in a rainy day. At the end of the novel, Mr. Lockwood passes by a church where Edgar, Heathcliff and Catherine are buried. He mentions that each tombstone has decayed differently. The three head—stones on the slope next the moor: the middle one grey, and half buried in heath: Edgar Linton’s only harmonized by the turf and moss creeping up its foot: Heathcliff’s still bare.The writer used the harsh environment to emphasize the characters’ moods and indicate a miserable story.
