Arranged nonlinearly, it interweaved the story that happens at present and the story that happened in the past, showing great fragmentary and jumping characteristics. Just as Barbara Hill Rigney (1992) says: each event in the novel is similarly fragmented, related impressionistically, and subverts concepts of textual unity and defies totalized interpretation (p. 32).
