He holds that cultural linguistics is the synthesis of three traditions in linguistic anthropology and cognitive linguistics. Ⅱ Palmerrsquo;s cultural linguistics Three traditions of linguistic anthropology Boasian linguistics was established by Franz Boas and many of his follows such as his student Alfred Kroeber . The Boasian approach, which flourished from the first decade of the 1900s through the 1940s, was primarily concerned with describing the grammars of languages in their own terms rather than framing them in terms of categories previously developed fro the study of Indo-European languages. Ethnosemantics emerged as the favored mode of linguistic analysis in anthropology during the 1960s and remained a popular mode of interpretation in the 1970s. Ethnosemantics, or ethnoscience, is the study of the ways in which different cultures organize and categorize domains of knowledge, such as those of plants, animals, and kin. ES developed during the 1960s and 1970s and it assumes that purposeful speakers apply linguistic resources toward social ends in culturally defined situation, ES provides a needed dimension of social context and a dynamic perspective that is largely missing in the relatively static studies of native vocabularies typical of ethnosemantics approaches. Cognitive linguistics Cognitive linguistics unifies the study of seemingly disparate realms of language as phonology, syntax, semantics, and discourse by treating them all in terms of
