Chibi lies on the southern bank of the Yangtze River 36 km northwest of Puqi City. It is a stone hill extending into the river. There are two huge Chinese characters of “Chibi” engraved on the cliff, 1.5m long and 1m wide each. Legends say they were written by Zhou Yu of the Three Kingdoms Period. Located within the boundaries of Chibi City, Hubei Province, the ruin of Battle of Red Cliff is the key cultural relic preservation organ in Hubei Province. It has recorded a famous numerically superior campaign in the Eastern Han Dynasty between Caocao and Liu Bei, Sun Quan. Battle of Red Cliffs The?Battle of Red Cliffs, otherwise known as the?Battle of Chibi, was a decisive battle at the?end of the Han Dynasty, immediately prior to the?Three Kingdoms period of?Chinese history. It was fought in the winter of 208/9 AD between the allied forces of the southern warlords?Liu Bei?and?Sun Quan?and the numerically superior forces of the northern warlord?Cao Cao. Cao Cao led his 500,000 troops pursuing Liu Bei while coveting the Kingdom of Wu in the east, wanting to reunify the whole country. Liu Bei retreated in defeat until to Xiakou by the Yangtze River. He sent Zhuge Liang to persuade Sun Quan, king of the Wu, to ally against Cao Cao. Sun Quan agreed and the allied force defeated Cao Cao with a big fire which burnt the rocks red, hence , the name of Chibi, meaning red clif
