Name:Chen WanLe No.:(此处填你的学号) What is 3D Printing? 3D printing or Additive manufacturing is a process of making a three-dimensional solid object of virtually any shape from a digital model. 3D printing is achieved using an additive process, where successive layers of material are laid down in different shapes.3D printing is also considered distinct from traditional machining techniques, which mostly rely on the removal of material by methods such as cutting or drilling. History of 3D Printing The phenomenon of engineering objects through digital technology came into being in the mid 80’s when Charles Hulls introduced a technology that could print physical 3D objects with digital data as input. Hull named this technology as Stereolithography and got it patented in 1987. Making further advancements, he founded Stereolithography Apparatus, the first commercial 3D Printing machine. Scott Crump took the technology further by inventing Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM). He later founded Stratasys and brought into the market a 3D Modeler, based on the FDM. This was a major breakthrough in digital printing technology that made way for bigger advancements. After more innovations and introduction of newer products, MIT annexed the name ‘3D Printing’ to the emerging printing technology in 1995. The first high definition colour 3D Printer was launched by Z Corporation in 2005. 3D Printing of Today 3D printing has been making forays and finding its strides in the areas beyond Product Design and Development. Realizing the great potential of 3D printers, various other industries such as metal casting, jewelry, etc. are also contemplating on resorting to 3D printing technology for their manufacturing processes. Hence, it is evident that the 3D printing industry is experiencing a boom and it would be safe to say that the 3D printing has brought us at the cusp of a quantum leap in printing technology.
