This exposes areas of clean metal surface on the two components to be welded, which must be brought into contact with each other to generate the interatomic forces needed to form a weld. Bonding process Crashed oxide inclusions Examinations of butt-welded joints of aluminum using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have shown that the common deformation of the material in the weld zone leads to the destruction of the surface (that is, oxide and contaminant). TEM showed these surface layers in the form of numerous minute particles in the joint. The largest of these particles had a diameter of 12 nm. From Wikipedia Cold or contact welding was first recognized as a general materials phenomenon in the 1940s. It was then discovered that two clean, flat surfaces of similar metal would strongly adhere if brought into contact under vacuum.
