The Canadian Tulip Festival Each year in the first week of May，Ottawa，Canada’s capital city，becomes a flower ocean.More than three million tulips cover the roads，on both sides of the Ottawa River.These beautiful flowers announce the arrival of spring and the official opening of the Canadian Tulip Festival，which is the world’s largest tulip festival.During this period，Canada’s capital will be alive with not only blooming tulips，but music，parades，fireworks，and people from around the world. Why does Ottawa celebrate the Tulip Festival with such enthusiasm？The tradition began about 70 years ago.The German army had invaded the Netherlands in May,1940，and the royal family was forced to run away from their country.They went first to London then on to Ottawa where they were given Government House as a shelter. In 1943，Princess Juliana’s daughter，Princess Margriet was born at the Ottawa Civic Hospital.And the room where Princess Margriet was born was announced to be an official gift to the Netherlands by the Canadian government so that she would be born in her own country’s place.According to the Netherlands’s law，anyone who wasn’t born in the Netherlands will lose their citizenship；therefore Margriet would have no right to be the princess of the Netherlands. After the royal family returned to their homeland in 1945，Princess Juliana gave 100,000 tulip bulbs to the Canadian government and the citizens of Ottawa as a reward.This started a tradition and every year ever since，another 100,000 bulbs were sent to Ottawa and planted all around the city.Over the next decade，the Canadian Tulip Festival became bigger and bigger and tourists started making Ottawa their destination in early May.
