And I knew I could do it better. Thats the short explanation for how Yottoy came about. It all started in 1995, when Karcher Clark was faced with an incredibly tough decision: leave her life in New York and move to Los Angeles to follow the promotional toy company she worked for, or risk everything and follow her dream of opening her own toy company. content continues below I had a mission: create and develop the highest-quality character toys and custom promotional products, Karcher Clark says. She didnt want to just slap a logo on an existing product, like many other toy and promotional companies do. Instead, Karcher Clark found a former fabric factory in the garment district of New York City and tapped a friend to help her get started. Peter Doodeheefver, a Parsons graduate, signed on as creative director and partner, and the pair worked to grow their unconventional toy company. Since the beginning, the toys have been designed in the United States by hand--and hand-embroidered, as well. Karcher Clark says the key to developing toys in the United States is smart design and clever construction to increase efficiency in production. The first products were a combination of originals, such as the companys still-popular classic Yottoy Velveteens, plus storybook characters including Poky Puppy, The World of H.A. Rey (the creator of Curious George), and Mr. Night. Soon, clients were throwing the most challenging products at Yottoy. We marketed ourselves as a company that could do just about anything in the toy biz, from any different direction, just like our name, Karcher Clark says. Yotto
