Theeffectoflitteronvegetationandsoilmoisturein Typical grasslandAbstractGrasslandecosystemisoneoftheimportanttypesinterrestrialecosystem;typical grasslandistheimportantpartofInnerMongoliagrasslandwhichplaysakeyroleinthe developmentofagricultureandhusbandryproduction.Litteristhesignificantcomponent oftypicalgrassland,andalsoanimportantindicator ofgrasslandhealth.Thispaperprobes intotheeffectoftheamountoflitter onvegetationcommunitycomposition,characteristics ofabove-groundbiomass andsoilmoistureandinfiltrationrate.Thepapercouldbeseenas thetheoreticalbasisoftheimportanceoflitterinmaintainingthestabilityofgrassland system,rangelandresourcessustainabilityandgrasslandscientificmanagementand utilization.TheexperimentwasconductedindegradedsiteofInnerMongoliaGrassland EcosystemPositioningStation,ChineseAcademyofSciences.Inthefallof2002and2005, thetreatmentoflitteradditionandremovalwereconductedrespectivelyondegradedsite.Therearethreetreatments,includingsevere（H）andmedium（M）litteradditionandremoval,andcontrol（C）.The abovegroundvegetationsurveyisimplementedafter additionandremovaltreatmentinthegrowingseasoneveryyear.Thesurveyincludeson above-groundbiomassandbiomass of eachspecies.Inthemeantime,thedeterminationof soilmoisturecontentis conductedmonthlyingrowingseason.Theexperimentalresults showasfollows:Litteradditionandremovalindifferentseasonhas differentimpactongrassland productivity.Litteraddedinfallhas greaterimpactongrasslandbiomass thanthatin spring.Properadditioninlitteris usefulforincreasinggrasslandproductivity.Litter removalhas noobviousinfluenceongrasslandproductivitynomatterin springorfall.Thedifferentfunctionalgroupsinthetypicalgrasslandhadthedifferentresponseto litteradditionorremoval.Perennialforbsandannualsandbiennialsweresensitivetothe litterchange.Meanwhile,perennialforbsandbunchgrasshasecologicalcompensation effectwhichis goodforthestabilityoftheecosystem.Thelitteradditionandremovalindifferentseasonshasvariousimpactsonsoil infiltrationrate.Thelitteraddedin s
