Famine (1937), Land (1946), and Insurrection (1951) are novels of 19th-century Ireland. He also wrote notable short stories, as well as autobiographical works, Two Years (1930) and Shame the Devil (1934). (Paragraph 4) Juxtaposition No.3 Mary…with the excitement of a little child. (Paragraph 11) Martin…driving out every other desire but that of asserting his manhood and of subjugating the earth. (Paragraph 12) Juxtaposition No.4 Mary sighed…became suddenly afraid of that pitiless, cruel earth…that would keep her chained to hard work and poverty all her life… And Martin, absolutely without thought, worked furiously… (Paragraph 13) Juxtaposition No.5 As they walked home… Martin walked in front with another peasant talking about the sowing. Mary walked behind, with her eyes on the ground, thinking. (Paragraph 25) Wor
