Session 2 Child’s early language development* The Development of Speech Production* 1)Vocalization(a few months old) Significance Since all these sounds are indescribable by language criterion, are they useful in the process of children’s language development? 2) Babbling (6 months old) Babbling is a type of vocalization while the child uses speech sounds. e.g. single vowels: /a:/, /u/, /ai/, /o/, etc. e.g. consonant+vowel: /ma:/, /ba:/, /da:/,etc. The repetitive uttering of these sounds give them a speech-like quality, e.g. /mama/, /gigi/, /papa/ The implications we may get: It is this melody, or the intonation pattern, that the infant hears first to recognize and then to imitate. It explains why mothers keep singing rhymes to infants even though they don’t understand. It is the same case with adults when any of us hear a new language for the first time. * Please listen and find out the different languages from their melodies The implications for FLT Question: Is early introduction of a FL in primary school necessary ? Early exposure to a FL is helpful for learner to be familiar with the melody of the language. What and how to teach the beginners of a FL? The teaching of rhymes, songs or listening to sth. the learner don’t understand is helpful. 2. One-word utterance This question is not at all conclusive They can be produced from as young as 4 months to as young as 18 months Averagely produced around the age of 10 months 2. One-word utterance The question is not at all conclusive because: 1)individual difference 2)difficulty in determining the onset of speech Around 3 years of age, differences will largely disappear. Functions of one-word utterances To name objects To request To emphasize actions To express complex situations The implications for FLT Children can make full use of their limited linguistic resources to communicate with others. They do that with the expectation that adults can understand them wit
