Chapter 7 Education Warm-up What are the differences between the educational system of the UK and that of China? Is university life in Britain different from that in China? If so, in which aspects? History of education Before 1870 school set up by churches, 40% of children aged 10 attended The 1870 act established state-financed primary education. The 1944 Act established free and compulsory secondary education. 1988 Education Reform Act established National Curriculum, and state schools are required to adhere to it until students reach age 16. However, independent schools are not obliged to do so. National Curriculum core subjects are: English, mathematics and science; Welsh is a core subject in Welsh-speaking schools. Foundation subjects are design and technology; information and communication technology; history; geography; modern foreign languages; music; art and design; physical education; religious education; and citizenship. Northern Ireland follows a similar framework; however, schools can develop additional curriculum elements to express their particular ethos and meet pupils individual needs and circumstances. The curriculum also includes the Irish language in Irish-speaking schools. Schools and examinations The education system in the UK is divided into four main parts, primary education, secondary education, further education and higher education. Children in the UK have to legally attend primary and secondary education which runs from about 5 years old until the student is 16 years old. Further EducationOnce a student finishes secondary education they have the option to extend into further education. Students will typically study in either the Sixth Form of a School, a Sixth form college, or a further education college. Following two years of study, students may take A-Level (short for Advanced Level) examinations, which are required for university entrance in the UK, or GNVQ to enter technique college. Higher EducationUndergraduate degrees t
