ABSTRACTAsanEnglishwriter,VirginiaWoolfisregardedasoneoftheforemostmodernistliteraryfiguresofthetwentiethcentury.EventhoughWoolfhasneverclaimedherselfasafeminist,herexplicitfeministopinion,herconcernandfascinationwithwomen‘sidentitiesandtheirliveshaveshapedherworksprofoundly.Intermsofliteraturecreation,shecallsforceasingimitatingmen‘sdiscourseandbuildingupfemale‘sspecificliterarytraditionandfemale‘slanguagetochangethesituationofwomen‘slongabsenceinthepatriarchalliterarycanon.Woolfattributesthefundamentalreasonforwomen‘sinferiorpositioninthepatriarchalsocietytowomen‘sphysicaldependenceonmen,andbringsupthenotionthatwomenmustachieveindependencebothinphysicalandspiritualaspects.AsoneofVirginiaWoolf‘smasterpiecesofstreamofconsciousness,Mrs.DallowaysymbolizesthematureofWoolf‘swritingtechniquesandthoughts,andinspiresmanyjuniorwritersinthefollowingcentury.From1998to2002,therearethreenovelsthathaveengagedinexplicitdialoguewithMrs.Dalloway:TheHours,Mr.Dalloway,andMr.Phillips.Ofthreeretellings,MichaelCunningham‘sTheHoursisthemosttentativeandsuccessfulone,anddrawsgreatattentionassoonasitspublicationin1998.CriticsathomeandabroadaresurprisedbyitsexquisitenarrativestructureaswellasitscreativeintertextualitywithWoolf’sMrs.Dalloway,someofwhichevenregardsTheHoursasamodernmodifiedversionofMrs.Dalloway.ItservesasamajorcontributiontoCunningham‘sPulitzerPrizewinningin1999,anditsfilmadaptationeventuallyreceivedninenominationsofthe75thAcademyAward.Sofar,domesticandoverseacriticsaremainlyfocuseitherontheinheritancebetweenTheHoursanditsprecursorMrs.Dalloway,orthefilmadaptationofTheHours,andnoattentionhasbeenpaidtotherelationshipamongthethreetexts—Mrs.Dalloway,TheHoursandthefilmadaptationofthelatter.Andsuchstudyisverymeaningfulasthereisaninternalconsistencyofthemesandliterarystrategiesrunningthroughthemall.Takingthelatestresearchachievementinadaptationstudiesandthesocialandhistoricalcontextinwhichthetextswereproducedintoaccount,thisthesisintendstoapproachthethreetextsinlightoffeministideology
