AbstractElectronic transformers are thecriticalequipments ofa smartsubstation,whichis an essential constitution of strong smart grid. The survey of electronictransformers application situation conducted by the State Grid Corporation has showedthatelectronictransformersonlyaccountfor0.48%ofalltransformersinoperation.Theiroperatingreliabilityisconfrontedwithsevereproblems,especiallytheadaptationofelectromagneticenvironment,hinderingthefurtherpromotionof electronic transformers in power system. This paper is based on experimentalstudies toexploretheelectromagneticenvironmentofGIS(GasInsulatedSubstation)electronictransformer,providingasolidfoundationfortheelectronictransformer standardsandelectromagneticcompatibilitytestmethods.In thispaper, themechanismofelectromagnetic transientin operatingtheisolatingswitchesofGISdevicewasanalyzed.VFTO(VeryFastTransientOvervoltage)andVFTC(VeryFastTransientCurrent)resultedfromtheroutineoperationofisolatingswitchesandotherelectricalequipment;itwillproducearcre-striking.252kVGISequipmentwasusedinthispapertoproposeanexperimentalapproachoftheelectromagneticenvironment.Rogowskicoilsensormethodwas appliedtomeasureVFTCconsideringtheelectromagnetictransientresultingfromdifferentoperatingspeeds ofdivide-shutbrakesinisolatingswitches.ThecapacitivedividerwindowwasusedtomeasureVFTOattheload;theresistordivider high-voltageprobepintechP6039Awasadoptedto measuretheTEV(TransientEnclosure Voltage)ofisolationswitchesand drivepipes.ThispaperwasbasedonalargenumberofexperimentstoexplorethemechanismofGISelectromagneticenvironment.Theresultsshowedthatthedivide-shutbrakesofisolatingswitchesandoperatingspeedwerenotthemain factorsaffectingtheVFTCandVFTOfrequency.Differentamplitudeswereshown atdifferentlocationsofTEV:transientelevationofdrivepipeswasgreaterthantheamplitudeat theisolatingswitches.Thebreaking speedof theisolatingswitcheswas notthemainfactoraffectingtheriseofover-currentandover-voltage;ithadasignificantinfluenceontheamplitudesofover-currentandover
