Reactions of Ethers Summary and Key Words Alcohols, phenols, and ethers are organic derivatives of water in which one or both of the water hydrogens have been replaced by organic groups. Alcohols are compounds that have an -OH bonded to an alkyl group. They can be prepared in many ways, including hydration of alkenes. The most general method of alcohol synthesis involves reduction of a carbonyl compound. Aldehydes, esters, and carboxylic acids yield primary alcohols on reduction; ketones yield secondary alcohols. Alcohols are weak acids and can be converted into their alkoxide anions on tre
