AbstractHeavy-dutyandfastarethedevelopmentdirectionoftheinternationalrailwaytransportation.Arationaldesigntomeetthestrengthrequirementistheresearchhotspotsinthemanufactureofaheavydutyfreightcar.CodeofTB/T1335-1996isthemainreferencetodesignofawagonwiththehighestspeed120km/handthelargestaxle-load25t.Withtheincreasingofaxle-loadandspeed,theoldcodecouldnotmeetthedesignrequirementofaheavy-haulfreightcar.Furthermore,theoldcodecannotreflectthedistributionoftheearthpressureonthewall.Inviewofthis,thepresentpaperfocusesonthedeterminationofearthpressureonthewallofanopenwagon.Themainresearchfindingsarediscussedasfollows:Theendwallofawagonisreferredasshortretainingwalls.Forslidingsurfaceisaplanesurroundedbyfracturetrajectory,variousstudiessuggestthemechanicsofshortretainingwallsdiffersfromtraditionalwallsandthelateralearthpressuresonshortretainingwallsarenolongerproperlypredicatedbyusingconventionalat-restoractiveequations.Inthispaper,basedonMohrcircleandlimitequilibriumtheory,theauthorspresentanalyticalresultsfromcalculationsperformedtoestimatethemechanicalresponseofbackfilledopenings,emphasizingtheeffectofloadtransferalongtheinterfacebetweenthewallandrelativelysoftbackfill.Withrespecttofeatures,themiddledoorinthelateralwallofwagonissimilartotrapdoorinTerzaghiexperiments.BasedonMohrcircleandlimitequilibriumtheory，ananalyticalsolutionofearthpressureisperformedtoestimatethetrajectoryofstablearchinbackfill,emphasizingtheeffectofloadtransferalongtheinterfacebetweenmiddledoorandlateralwall.Thenthelateralpressurecanbecalculatedassoonasthevolumeofslidingwedgeisobtained.Theresultsindicatethatthearchingeffectsdevelopedinthebackfillgreatlyinfluencetheresultantforceonthesupportingstructure.Theanalyticalresultsarecomparedtoexperimentalandthediscussionthatfollowshighlightssomeofthekeyfactorsinfluencingtheresultantforceonthesupportingstructures.Fortheactiveearthpressureonawallsubjectedtobothhorizontalandverticalseismicinertialforces，ittookintoaccountarchingeffectsoccurringinthebackfillandass
