This thesis is based on the theory of culture genes, with culture genes as a whole new study angel, thorough the study of the Taiyuan historic district culture genes, obtaining the ideas about culture transmission protection and renewal and completing the plan and design. This research takes case study as a start, aiming at broadening the horizon meanwhile deepening the depth of the study of historic blocks protection and renewal. Taiyuan, as one of the cradles of Chinese civilization, enjoys long and deep traditional culture. And the old district, as the witness of the subsidence of the urban culture, is very representative. This thesis takes the multidisciplinary combination, induction, seduction and empirical study as main research methods. Through the analogy with biological genes, cultural genes can be more deeply unscrambled. According to the forms of the carriers in the historic district, cultural genes are defined as dominant, recessive and behavioral. Then we interrupt the features, functions and meanings of the cultural genes in the protection and renewal. By this way we could obtain the most essential and typical cultural genes in the transmission of the Taiyuan historic district culture more exactly. According to the status quo of the cultural genes of the historic blocks in the old district of Taiyuan and the analysis of similar domestic cases, we finally get some inspirations about the protection and renewal from the angel cultural genes and set up a more comprehensive system of up-dating thinking and protection.
