They are typically used to demonstrate specific aspects of the enterprise knowledge base, help stakeholders search and locate knowledge and accelerate the internalization process of explicit knowledge and the socialization process of tacit knowledge, therefore promoting the efficiency of utilizing organization knowledge. However, because of the lack of a broadly accepted standard and clearly stated definition, many researchers nowadays are actually doing research of different disciplines under the name of knowledge map. Some other researchers use their expertise to build up special knowledge maps only for some specific fields. These knowledge maps are usually limited to be transformed to other situations. According to the traditionally KM understanding of knowledge map, We treat them as a graphical knowledge retrieving and visualization tool built upon existing knowledge bases. And we mainly discuss knowledge maps based on ontological structured knowledge base, because ontology is an important way of knowledge representation today and our team has rich experience on ontology based knowledge management systems. This paper suggests a relation combination model and an abstract knowledge node model as an abstraction mechanism for knowledge maps while pointing out the difference between knowledge map and ontology visualization. After that, some adaptive description methods upon these models are discussed to deal with the changes of knowledge base.
