ii ii Abstract Translation is a communicative action to express information between two kinds of languages and cultures; it acts like a bridge to connect different countries by means of translation strategies. In the process of translation, which kind of translation strategies should be taken into consideration is always a debatable problem that translators will constantly run into. Among translation strategies, domestication and foreignization are two major and representative translation strategies. This thesis makes an attempt to discuss the two strategies and their application in English version of Ta Tsing Leu Lee. Ta Tsing Leu Lee is a systematic Code in the feudal society and it occupies an important position in the process of ancient Chinese legal system. The study of its English translation will demonstrate how the foreigner considers the Chinese traditional legal culture. This thesis first makes a brief introduction of Ta Tsing Leu Lee and researches of it in the west and in China. Next, the thesis expounds the domestication and foreignization at home and abroad before it points out the necessity of making further studies of these two major translation strategies. Then, it discusses other translation strategies like literal and free translation strategies used in the translating process. In the following sections, the author of the thesis continues to deal with factors which may influence the translator?s choice of translation strategies: the types of source text, the purposes of translator, readers? acceptance and the constraints. Finally, the thesis studies the applications of domestication and foreignization by analyzing typical examples from Ta Tsing Leu Lee translated by George Staunton in 1810.This thesis concludes that domestication strategy is the main trend in the target text while these two translation strategies have their respective features and applicable values.
