She is a prolific writer, whose works involves novel and literary criticism. The Children’s Book is one of her representative works, which was published in 2009 and shortlisted for Booker Prize. In 2010, the novel, The Children’s Book, got the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. The novel describes complex relationship and the experience in the process of their growth between four families from 1895 through World War I as the background. The author provides us characteristics of the novel as fascinating background, multiple themes and complex inner relationship among characters. In The Children’s Book, there is a mutual connection between the novel creation and archetypes. Since too many characters and no dominant plot of the novel, archetypal theory could be a better way to analyze the novel and reveal the unconsciousness in the process of creation. Through rewriting and quoting，the author build the characters from the perspective of archetypal characteristics. This dissertation tries to analyze the novel which is on the basic of intensive reading and under the guidance of archetypal theory. There are five chapters in the dissertation. The first chapter is introduction which refers to introduce the basic knowledge about the author, the novel and archetypal criticism. The body of the novel consists of three parts. In the second chapter, four characters are analyzed, in the process of their growth, from different archetypal angles. In the third part, from three different motifs, the multiple themes are analyzed. In the fourth part, the characters’ fates are analyzed from the perspective of narrative pattern. The last chapter is conclusion, above the analyzed chapters; it reveals the author’s unconsciousness in her process of creation.
