i i Acknowledgements This thesis is one of my researches in translation strategies involved in rendering Chinese classics into English by native Chinese translators. I am very grateful to my teachers in the College of Foreign Languages of Anhui Normal University. After studying English linguistics, literature and translation, I have realized that translation should be examined from different perspectives, and translation theories should be based on different disciplines. I owe much to Prof. Sun Shengzhong, my supervisor, who has given me valuable instructions, useful suggestions and constant encouragement. I am deeply impressed by his earnest and scientific attitude towards and vigorous work in research that will influence me forever. Finally, I would thank all my classmates, especially Hu Tingting and Wang Li, for their comments and suggestions. ii ii Abstract In translating Chinese classics into English, how to deal with cultural factors is very crucial for the effective introduction of Chinese culture to the West. Therefore, how to translate culture-loaded words and expressions in literary works has been an important issue concerned by translators. This paper attempts to study the translation of Chinese culture-loaded words and expressions into English in the English version of Fu Sheng Liu Ji 《( 浮生六记》) rendered by Lin Yutang, namely, Six Chapters of a Floating Life, in order to find out a principle applicable to translating Chinese classics into English by native Chinese translators. In order to reveal the strategies for translating culture-loaded words and expressions, this paper applies the category of them to analyzing translation methods. By means of contrast between the source text and the translated text, the translation methods of culture-loaded words and expressions in Six Chapters of a Floating Life are classified and summarized.
