Passive sentences are the basic structure of the language, which are widely used in Chinese and English. The translation of passive sentences, to a large extent, determines the quality of the whole text, and causes obstacles to the readers. The materials of legal documents translated by the author covers broadly, including bill of complaint, answer to complaint, petitions, legislative texts, such as Marriage Law and so on. There are quite a lot of passive sentences in the legal documents, especially in Marriage Act 1961.The author has selected some typical sentences to discuss the types and translation strategies of passive sentences in legal documents. Firstly, the author introduces the importance of passive sentences in the legal documents and makes a brief introduction of types of the passive sentences. Then, the author takes some examples from Marriage Act 1961 to explore three translation strategies: translating the passive sentences into active sentences, translating passive sentences into passive sentences, and translating the passive sentences into sentences without subjects. Finally, lessons and experience learned from this translation are discussed.
