—A Case Study of the Students in Wuxi Vocational Central School
Abstract
Secondary vocational education is employment-oriented,so the students are required to have an ability to adapt to the society. Autonomous learning is a good way to develop life-long learning ability and it’s very important for students in their lives.
English is an important international language, and it is also one of the required subjects for the students in secondary vocational school. However, the students in vocational schools are a special group compared with senior high school students, for academically speaking, they lag behind their peers in senior high schools. They are so poor in their studies that they have no interest in learning some basic courses, including English, and the teachers often find their work difficult and challenging. How can we solve the problem? Autonomous learning is a good way to help such students develop their learning interests and improve their learning. After the students have developed the autonomous learning ability, they can transfer this ability to other subjects and have a good foundation for future study. And developing autonomous learning ability is also one of the main goals in “the curriculum of secondary vocational schools” published in 2002 by Ministry of Education. Therefore, this paper suggests cultivating their autonomous learning ability and promoting autonomous learning effects.
The study attempts to answer the following three questions:
Can cultivating students’ ability of autonomous English learning help promote their learning interest and motivation?
