Though he lived only to thirty-two years old, he is a prolific writer, composing one poem, three collections of short stories, eight novels and fifty-five critical essays. As “the native bugler of American literature movement of naturalism, respected and admired deeply by American writers and historians” (French 1), he introduced Zola’s experimental novel positively, adding the tragic color to American literature field of that days which ever advocated the positive writing style and presented a “smile” America to the public. Thus he is also viewed as a “pioneer of ‘recrimination’ in American literature movement” (Marchand 222) at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century. Norris was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His father was a wealthy Chicago merchant, and his mother was vaguely literary. Influenced and guided by
