ii ii Abstract Language serves as an important tool in our daily communication. Language is not only used to exchange information and idea, but also adopted to show our attitude, emotional feelings, and stance. It is widely acknowledged that the use of stance markers is one of the most efficient devices in expressing personal feelings, attitudes, commitment or judgment. This research uses the theory proposed by Biber and his colleagues in Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English in order to analyze the diversity between Chinese students’ use of stance markers and American students’ use of stance markers in writing argumentations. In this study, the Louvain Corpus of Native English Essays (LOCNESS) is adopted as the reference corpus representing American students in general. Written English Corpus of Chinese Learners (WECCL) is adopted as the reference corpus representing Chinese students in general. 50 argumentations from the two corpora are chosen as the data used in this research to make a comparison between the two corpora. The study finds that both the two groups tend to use stance markers in their argumentations on intention or on purpose. According to the use of lexical words, Chinese students prove to be strong in tone and assertive in expressing stance when they make a point and give suggestions. At the same time, American students tend to use a variety of meaning in marking their stance, however, Chinese students resort to only several certain aspects in marking stance. Chinese students are strong in iii iii intonation, but insufficient in methods.
